The Costume Society celebrates the re-furbished V&A Museum of Childhood and its stores with a study day to coincide the exhibition 300 years of Children’s Costume and the publication of Noreen Marshal’s book of the same title.

The study day will focus on Fashion in Miniature from children’s to doll’s clothes. The day will include academic papers, a tour of the new storage area with special items for members to study and time to view the new exhibition.

Speakers will include:
Noreen Marshal, Curator: The Costume Curators Tale: from Alice Bands to Y Fronts.
Noreen Marshal, Curator: Material Evidence of a Victorian Childhood, a fascinating insight into research of the clothes of two children.
Phillip Warren, The Liberty Bodice.

There is an excellent café for lunch at the museum, or you may prefer to explore the many eateries in the area or bring your own packed lunch.

The dates of our visit to Italy in November 2008 are now fixed and the programme arranged. The emphasis of this trip is as a study tour, though while costume and textiles are our primary interest, we would not want to overlook that Florence is the home of the Medici, of Botticelli, Galileo and that we shall be visiting Sienna, Pienza and Rome. As usual we have tried to hit the right balance between filling our time in Italy with not making it so crammed full as to be impossibly exhausting.


FLORENCE

Wednesday 5th November - PM

Thursday 6th November
Leave by coach for San Giuliano Terme (nr Pisa) and visit the Cerratelli Theatre Costume collection.
Lunch in a nearby restaurant Continue to Florence.
Leave on foot for a guided walk with Antonia Lanza d'Ajeta to include the Cathedral Square, Piazza della Signoria Visit the Museo Salvatore Ferragamo.
Dinner independently.

Friday 7th November
Leave by coach for a visit to the Polimoda (subject to confirmation) Visit the Antico Setificio (by special arrangement) Lunch at Caffe Ricchi.
Continue by coach to Villa La Pietra (by special arrangement).
Return to Florence.
Lecture at the British Institute.
Dinner independently.

Saturday 8th November
Visit the Costume Museum and the Restoration Laboratory.
Visit a privately owned fan collection (by arrangement with Grazia Gobbi Sica and Corinne Kraft Bernabei).
Lunch independently.
Leave by coach for a visit to the Museo Stibbert.
Leave by coach for Arcetri for dinner at Ristorante Omero
Return to the hotel.


PIENZA

Sunday 9th November
Leave the hotel with luggage for Siena.
Guided visits in the city to include the Duomo, Museo dell'Opera and a Contrada to see the costumes and the banners of the Palio race. Continue to Siena.
Lunch independently. Continue to Pienza.
Visits in the town of Pienza to include the Duomo and the Cathedral Museum with its Opus Anglicanum (14th century cope) and stay at the Hotel II Chiostro di Pienza, Corso Rossellino 26, 53026 PIENZA

ROME

Monday 10th November
Leave (with luggage) for Formello near Rome.

Tuesday 11th November
Visit the Villa Borghese Picture and Sculpture Gallery (focusing on costumes in paintings).
Visit the costume and textile collection in Palazzo Braschi, Museo di Roma.
Lunch independently.
Afternoon at leisure or visit the Palazzo Doria Pamphilj.
Drinks in a private palazzo (subject to confirmation).
Dinner at Trattoria La Campana.

This study day has been organised in collaboration with National Museums Scotland as part of the events programme for their exhibition Jean Muir: a Fashion Icon (7 November 2008 - 15 March 2009). The Museum acquired the Jean Muir Collection in 2005. It comprises some 18,000 items including garments, jewellery and accessories, sketches, patterns, toiles, photographs and other promotional material. The study day will explore and celebrate the work of this leading British designer within the context of international fashion in the 1966-1995 period.
