Costume Society Awards
Appeal for Donations.
We all know the last few years has been a difficult period for people and charities financially, with
interest rates low financing our five awards becomes more and more difficult.
As we have done in the past we are appealing to the generosity of our members for
donations towards the continued funding of our awards. Your donations of whatever amount
will help.
With a constitutional aim of providing education in dress studies,the Costume Society has Five awards:
- Patterns of Fashion Award to honour the work of Janet Arnold (1932-98). An annual award
of £500 is offered to one of three short-listed applicants for producing a reconstruction
of a garment from Janet Arnold's seminal Patterns of Fashion books.
- Yarwood Award commemorates former chairman of the Costume Society, Doreen Yarwood. The
award is offered for a period of three years to an MA course in the history of dress or theatre
design at a specified institution. An award of £500 is made annually to a student on the course.
- Student Bursary enables the recipient to attend the Costume Society's annual symposium.
The award is open to UK students at graduate or postgraduate level engaged in dress studies
research which reflect the year's symposium theme.
- Museum Placement Award of £1,000 funds a student volunteer, to work on a dress-related
project in a museum collection. The award supports students seeking work experience and helps
UK museums accomplish projects essential to the care, knowledge or interpretation of dress
collections.
- Student Design Award is an integral part of the Annual Symposium. A Fashion course is chosen
through its locality to the venue of the event. A design brief is set based on the theme of
the Symposium. An award of £250 is presented to the winner.
