22nd January : more luxurious than jewellery
This study day will follow the development of Venetian needlepoint laces from 16th century embroideries through the geometric and simple floral designs of the earliest true lace, punto in aria, to the flamboyance of the late 17th century baroque style in which flowing, exotic designs were filled with detail and highlighted with three-dimensional raised work. The day will alternate slide lectures showing the exquisite detail of the laces and their use in fashion through portraiture with time to study many original examples from the tutor’s collection. There will also be a brief study of some of the many copies made in the late 19th- early 20th centuries.

Whitework embroideries
The scope of this day is yet to be finalised but it will deal with the changing use of whiteworked accessories in fashion together with changes in designs and stitches through the 18th and/or 19th centuries. Slide lectures will alternate with opportunities to study original whitework from the relevant period.
